Imam Wallace D. Mohammed, son of Elijah
Mohammed and known to many as Imam W. Deen Mohammed, is among the most
progressive voices for Al-Islam and Peace in the world today. His humanitarian
service, clear representation of true Islamic faith and practice, and
leadership for the establishment of Muslim life in America are well
documented.
He is a tireless laborer for the interests of peace and justice in our
world as he has worked for and realized direct and genuine dialog between
people of all races and religions. On behalf of his religious community
he has been a frequent participant in countless national and international
gatherings, meeting with important world leaders for the purpose of
improving the global human condition. Among other affiliations, he is
an international president of the World Conference of Religion and Peace
(WCRP) and a leading member of the Peace Council, the World Supreme
Council of Mosques, and the U.S. Presidential Religious Advisory Council.
In February, 1975 upon the passing of his father, the Honorable Elijah
Mohammed, Imam Mohammed was unanimously elected the new leader of the
Nation of Islam by its leaders and general membership. Through over
25 years of emphasis on the Holy Qur'an, tradition of Mohammed the Prophet,
and an inspired strategy reflected in a program of gradual and moderate
change designed to correct erroneous religious influences and satisfy
the requisites of a truer Islamic identity, he succeeded in transforming
the volatile 'Black Muslims' into a progressive society of Muslim Americans.
They are estimated to be at least 2.5 million people today.
Outdistancing narrow racial concerns and accusations of neglect of his
father's work, Wallace D. Mohammed's leadership continues to build upon
this new and solid religious foundation with concrete plans into the
next century for the strengthening of families, neighborhoods, and communities.
